This week's Hottest Stories and Best Comments highlight some wonders of humanity: man-made items as seen from space, a lovingly made (and soon-to-be-ruined) Trek dream home, our favorite superheroes (Avengers! Batman! Captain America! Wonder Woman!), the tragedy of Firefly and ... wacky theories brilliant scientists actually believed.
Back in the 1960s, The Avengers—with Patrick Macnee as John Steed and Diana Rigg as Mrs. Emma Peel—was one of the sexiest TV shows on the air. One particular episode was so racy that it was edited for broadcast in the USA ... but its raciness still managed to invade Marvel's groundbreaking mutant comic.
Each year, thousands of rare books are sold for hundreds or thousands of dollars each—and often much more—and many of those books are clearly science fiction, fantasy or horror. In 2010, a rare and beautiful 19th-century book, Birds of America by John James Aububon, set a new record by selling for $11.5 million, but a copy of this same book sold last week for a "disappointing" $7.9 million. (Such a bargain!)
George Lucas is going down memory lane and talking about the making of Star Wars. In the process, he's revealed that the Force was not always with him, and how hard, painful and unpleasant the whole experience of making A New Hope has been.
My building-of-things skills peaked at model cars when I was 11 and have atrophied something fierce since. So to watch this delightful young woman take it upon herself to build a TARDIS from scratch is both mind-boggling and adorable as all get-out.
